A buffer absorbs small extras before they become a large overrun.

There is no universal contingency percentage. More suppliers, weather exposure and variable pricing justify a larger buffer.

Identify uncertain costs first. Contingency should not hide expenses that could have been listed normally.

Record why contingency was used so you can decide whether another category needs to be reduced.
